St Luke's page by Holyrose St Luke's page by Holyrose
Black and white reproduction of the page of the beginning of Luke's gospel taken from the Lindisfarne Gospels.
See the original page: [link]

30*40cm - More or less 100 hours of work.
Sorry but I can't manage to take a good photo of that one, it seems so bland on the computer.

This is an incredible reproduction. What is your process like for putting together something like this?

My biggest fear in life is having to draw a load of Celtic knots. Well done. I am amazed.

WOW!! :wow: All those pain-staking details....this is great! All the tiny, wily meanderings of the slender Celtic threads....stunning. Definetly a :+fav: :D

Un trabajo verdaderamente bueno, conozco bastante bien los Evangelios de Lindisfarne y tu obra se acerca de una manera increíble al original.

Yo no hablo español muy bien pero he entendido lo que tu has escrito. :)
Pienso que yo no puedo reproducir un pagina como esa con los colores (como la verdadera pagina), y mi pagina aqui es un poco mas grande que la pagina original.
Muchas gracias.

(sorry for the mistakes, it's been such a long time! I've not written anything in Spanish for 2 years at least!)

Don't worry! Your Spanish is better than my English, and your calligraphy works are astonishing! Also Lindisfarne Gospels is one of my favourite pieces of Celtic Art. Have you seen Janet Backhouse's book about Lindisfarne Gospels? This book include quite good photographs of the carpet pages and also in the original size.
(Sorry for my mistakes!)

I think it almost scares me that you have such patience with these breathtaking works. wow, i really am breath take here, amazing.
I assume you had to learn the language too? How did you start?

:iconholyrose:
Holyrose Featured By Owner Sep 20, 2006
The language is latin, I learnt it during 3 years when I was 11 - 14 years old.
But unfortunately I almost forgot everything.
How did I start? Well it's a friend of mine who introduced me to the Lindisfarne Gospels and I was absolutely astonished. And then I tried to reproduce one page, and two, and...
Sure you need to be patient to reproduce that kind of things, but believe me, when you're working on that kind of pages, time stops.
Thanks so much for your comments and questions.

For sure, it takes a lot of passion and a lot of patience, 100 hours for this one maybe, but you know, once you begin a page like this, time stops, it's really weird!

wow Rose, that's amazing =] as always..

have you ever considered doing a full replica, using the original colours too?
i think it would be a lot of work.. but someone like you would be able to do it.

well done! you're amazing.

Yes I've thought about it. I will certainly do a "traditional" replica, I mean on parchment, with pigments for colours, and of the size of the original (for the moment my reproductions are 1/3 larger).
I'm not sure I'll be able to do it, but this is a crazy project I'd like to realize, in a couple of years I think.
Thanks a lot :)

Well it is just a project, i can't know if I will have enough time, will, and strengh to do that kind of thing in a couple of years, but one thing is sure is that I can't do it now, I will certainly make another black and white reproduction during the holidays, but after I'll stop this crazy job for a while.
Or maybe I'll do the coloured page when I'm retired, let's wait 50 years lol =p
