St Matthew's page by Holyrose St Matthew's page by Holyrose
Reproduction of Saint Matthew's page in the Lindisfarne Gospels (my lines are a bit sloping because of the photo, idem for the shadows and the white background).
Here's the original : [link]

Long, long, and long hours of work.

I saw the original of this in the British Library not long ago. This is a very impressive reproduction. I admire your patience.

Thank you :)
Are you sure you saw the REAL one? Because I know they have a facsimile to display, and the original is kept very preciously in a special room and I thought only a few people could see it.
Anyway, I'm going to the British Library in a couple of weeks, I'll see myself! ;)

They have both in the 'treasures of the British Library' room (they did when I went, anyway). There is also the first edition of Shakespeare's plays, some Leonardo da Vinci notebooks, the Magna Carta, some Byzantine psalters, the Guttenberg Bible, the Koran of Sultan Baybars and some song lyrics by the Beatles.

But it's the reproduction of a page taken from a medieval book, so it's logical ;)
Thanks :)

Absolutely miraculous. It's such a perfect reproduction! Did you actually draw that? By freehand? Did you trace? How'd you get it so...so...perfect???

:iconholyrose:
Holyrose Featured By Owner Jan 4, 2006
Yes I drew that myself :blushes:
I used a pencil, a ruler, a rubber, a pair of compasses, a China Ink pen (rotring rapidograph), and a black pigment felt-tip.
I did not trace anything, but I trained a lot, and I spent a huge number of hours on that piece (about 100 hours I think).

Thanks a lot anyway, even if I find that my reproduction is still far from being "perfect", I really appreciate your comment

Long, long, and long long long long long long long hours of work.

Beautiful. Doing reproductions of Lindisfarne Gospel pages seems so daunting, I wouldn't have the patience to attempt a page so intricate... :worship::clap::drool::+fav:

It may appear daunting for sure, for it takes a lot of time and I must admit it's diificult, painful sometimes. But I think there's something magic in those pages that worths some patience :).
Anyway, a big thanks for your comment, and for your fav.

Yes you may try, as for me, six months ago, I swore I would never do that kind of stuff, for it was too crazy, too diificult, too vain... and here I am :)
All you need is patience, patience and patience again, passion, and something a bit crazy on top of that... ,)
I took a look at your gallery, there's great stuff there, go on!
